fruit-on-a-stick

I have a lot of sisters. Six of them, in fact. Seven, if you count my sister-in-law, Sydney, which I do; eight, if you count my mom, which I do. So, last week, one sister who lives far far away in Wisconsin, and another sister who’d just spent 4 months in Zimbabwe were both actually here, so we all got together for brunch at the home of my sister, Lizzie. It was glorious. We laughed constantly, regaled by stories of failed attempts to catch baby monkeys with cookies in the African wild, and terrifying cliff jumps over alligator-infested waters (yes, even scary stories can be funny when told by a great storyteller!).

We ate amazing foods ‘til we could barely move, sipped on juice and coffee and caught up on all the news. It was a great time, and over too soon.

Many times when I attend potluck dinners, I look around and see nothing that I can eat, being vegan and abstaining from sugar, so I’m always glad that I brought something! Such was the case on the morning of our brunch. Platters of gooey, cream-filled pastries, buttery scones, decadent nut-topped French toast, and sausage/cream cheese-stuffed croissants invited me to indulge just this once in their sinful deliciousness.

I was able to resist, in part due to the beautiful, rainbow-colored fruit kabobs that I’d brought. I truly do not have any sugar cravings or any desire for desserts, but the fact that I can have sweet, colorful fruit any time I like is just wonderful and key for keeping me on track!

These kabobs are super easy and quick to make and are just lovely on a buffet table. Just spear chunks of strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, green grapes, blueberries, and purple grapes on bamboo skewers, and arrange on a platter or tray. They are perfect for taking to a picnic or potluck dinner because they are very easy to transport.
